Vinyl fence cost: published ranges and real drivers

Vinyl buyers usually want low upkeep and a clean look, and they have seen a per-foot number online. Here is what the national guides say, and the drivers that matter on a vinyl job.

Our rule: we do not invent prices. Every number on this page is quoted from a named public source with its date. Your price book, your supplier invoices, and your production rates beat any national range.

What the cost sites publish for vinyl

Source (date shown)Vinyl, installed per linear footVinyl, material only per linear foot
HomeGuide (Feb 3, 2026)$30 – $60$25 – $45
Fixr (Jan 31, 2025)$15 – $40$10 – $30
HomeAdvisor (Jun 20, 2026)$3,150 – $8,300 per projectnot listed

Fixr lists vinyl labor at $5 to $10 per linear foot, the same band it gives aluminum and steel and well under its wood labor band. (Fixr) That fits what most crews see: panelized product hangs faster than stick-built wood, so more of a vinyl price is material.

What moves a vinyl job

  • Product line and wall thickness. Two quotes for "6 foot white vinyl privacy" can be very different products. Put the manufacturer, product line, and post size on the quote so the comparison is fair.
  • Climate. HomeGuide says vinyl suits humid or rainy climates and warns privacy panels can blow over in high wind. (HomeGuide) Fixr notes cracking in very cold weather and softening in very hot weather. (Fixr) If you upgrade posts or add reinforcement for wind, say so and price it as its own line.
  • Height. HomeAdvisor says going from six to eight feet can add 25% to 35%. (HomeAdvisor)
  • Slope. Panels step; they do not rack easily like some wood and aluminum. Steep grade means more steps, more cut posts, and bigger bottom gaps to deal with.
  • Gates. Vinyl gates need aluminum or steel frame inserts to stay square. See fence gate cost.
  • Post caps and decor. HomeAdvisor lists post caps at $30 to $150 per cap, and Fixr lists decor such as finials and caps at $5 to $30 per linear foot depending on material. (HomeAdvisor; Fixr)

Selling vinyl honestly

Lead with what the homeowner actually wants: low paint work and a clean line. Then be straight about the tradeoffs the guides themselves print: up-front cost, wind, and temperature extremes. A homeowner who hears those from you first trusts the rest of your quote more than one who reads them after the sale.

If they are still deciding between materials, send them to the plain-English materials comparison on AI Fence Design, and compare with our wood fence cost and aluminum fence cost pages.

Lines a vinyl quote should carry

  • Manufacturer, product line, color, height, and style.
  • Post size, spacing, and how posts are set; any wind reinforcement.
  • Each gate with frame type, hinges, and latch.
  • How slope is stepped and the bottom gap.
  • Tear out and haul off of the old fence, if any.
  • Manufacturer warranty and your workmanship warranty, separately.

Common questions

How much does vinyl fence cost per linear foot?

HomeGuide publishes $30 to $60 per linear foot installed for vinyl, and Fixr publishes $15 to $40 per linear foot installed. HomeAdvisor lists $3,150 to $8,300 for a vinyl fence project.

Is vinyl fence more expensive than wood?

In the published guides, vinyl usually costs more up front than basic wood, and is sold as lower maintenance because it does not need annual resealing. The total depends on the product line, height, and gates.

Does vinyl fence work in high wind areas?

HomeGuide warns that vinyl privacy fences can blow over in high wind areas, and Fixr notes vinyl can crack in very cold weather and soften in very hot weather. Post setting and product choice matter more in those climates.
