Fence supplier guide for contractors
Where fence shops buy posts, panels, fabric, gates, and hardware, what each kind of supplier is good at, and the questions to ask before you open an account. Written for shops anywhere in the US. We do not rank suppliers.
The five kinds of supplier
Most fence companies end up buying from more than one place. Each type below fills a different job.
1. Wholesale fence distributors
Fence-focused wholesalers stock chain link, ornamental steel and aluminum, vinyl, wood, gates, and hardware in one place and sell to contractors. Two national examples, described from their own sites as of Oct 20, 2026:
- Master Halco describes itself as a manufacturer and wholesale distributor of fencing and decking products with over 70 locations across the US and Canada, and says it does not sell directly to the public.
- Merchants Metals describes itself as a manufacturer and distributor of fence systems for industrial, commercial, and residential work, with 35 service centers and 4 manufacturing facilities in North America.
Regional and independent fence distributors cover a lot of the country too. The American Fence Association publishes an annual Member Directory & Buyers' Guide that lists members by category and location, which is one way to find suppliers near you.
2. Manufacturers
Many vinyl, aluminum, and ornamental manufacturers sell through dealers or distributors rather than direct, and some run dealer programs for installers. A manufacturer relationship matters most for warranty paperwork, installation instructions, product specs, and lead times on made-to-order gates and panels. Always install to the manufacturer's written instructions; they decide post spacing, footing, and warranty terms, not a generic guide.
3. Lumber yards
For wood fence, a lumber yard or wood treater is often the main supplier. Wood pricing can move often, and many yards send regular price sheets to contractor accounts. Ask how often sheets come out, how long a quoted price holds, and how they handle grade and culls on delivery.
4. Hardware specialists
Gate hardware (hinges, latches, drop rods, closers, pool latches) causes more callbacks than panels do. Some shops buy hardware from a specialist supplier instead of the general distributor. Ask about backorder notices and approved substitutes before you need them, so a missing drop rod does not hold up a finished job.
5. Big-box pro programs
Big-box stores are useful for fill-in items, rentals, and same-day emergencies. Both large chains run free programs for pros: The Home Depot Pro Xtra and MyLowe's Pro Rewards. Their own pages list benefits such as purchase tracking and volume pricing on larger orders; terms change, so read the current program page.
Questions to ask before you open an account
| Ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| What do you need for a credit application, and what are the terms? | Get the terms in writing before the first order. |
| Do you send price sheets, and how long does a quoted price hold? | Your estimates are only as current as your price book. |
| Delivery days, minimums, and freight charges? | Freight can erase a lower unit price. |
| Lead times on gates, ornamental, and special orders? | Promised install dates depend on them. |
| How do you handle backorders and substitutions? | You want a call before the truck shows up short. |
| Return policy on unused and special-order material? | Overages happen on every job. |
| Will-call hours and yard pickup rules? | Crews lose mornings waiting at the counter. |
| Do you offer takeoff help, catalogs, or spec sheets? | Useful for commercial bids and new product lines. |
| Who is my rep, and who covers when they are out? | One phone number that answers saves hours. |
Working with suppliers week to week
- Keep one price book. When a new sheet arrives, update the items you actually quote and date the change. Estimates built on last month's prices are how margin leaks.
- Order from your takeoff, not memory. A line-item takeoff makes the order, the delivery check, and the return easier. Start with the takeoff checklist.
- Check deliveries against the order the day they land. Shortages found the morning of the install cost a crew day.
- Write supplier emails that get answers. Job reference, items, quantities, the date you need a yes or no. HQ has supplier email prompts.
- Know your backup. For the items that stop a job (gate hardware, posts, concrete), know a second place to get them.
How we write about suppliers
Suppliers named on this page are examples of each type, described from their own public pages on the date shown. Nobody paid to be listed and naming is not an endorsement. If a supplier ever sponsors AI Fence Media, the placement is labeled Sponsor and this guide does not change. See our Disclosure.
Common questions
Where do fence contractors buy materials?
Most shops use a mix: a wholesale fence distributor for chain link, ornamental, vinyl, gates, and hardware; a lumber yard for wood; a hardware specialist for gate hardware; and a big-box pro desk for fill-in items and emergencies. Which mix works depends on what you build and what is near you.
Can a new fence company open a supplier account?
Usually yes. Wholesale suppliers typically ask for a credit application with business and trade references. Many will sell to a new shop on a card or cash basis until an account is approved. Ask each supplier what they need.
Does AI Fence Pros recommend specific suppliers?
No. We name a few national suppliers as examples of each supplier type, using facts from their own public pages. Naming is not an endorsement, nobody paid to be listed, and any sponsor placement on our sites is labeled Sponsor.
How do I compare two supplier quotes fairly?
Put both on the same units (each, bundle, roll, linear foot), check for missing items and substitutions, and compare freight and lead times, not just the total. Our sister site AI Fence HQ has prompts that line quotes up for you to check.
